Contract Packaging Company
Expands Market Reach with VPMEP
The Company
Chem-Pak, Inc. (CP) of Winchester, VA, has been in business since 1966, employs 30, and is a successful contract packager of industrial chemical and aerosol products. It has achieved its current viability by being both a responsive custom manufacturer and by developing innovative and unique products for direct sale to the industrial and commercial marketplace.
The Situation
In order to remain competitive in the modern marketplace, CP was forced to upgrade its plant, equipment, and facilities. To achieve this upgrade, a greater revenue stream was required to finance a new facility. Further, an overall strategy for future growth that maximized the strength of the present CP management team needed to be constructed.
The Response
VPMEP project managers Gerald Burch and Bob Houlihan recommended a three-stage approach. First, Burch identified opportunities for improvement in management communication and system development. Then Houlihan followed up with a strategic planning exercise that outlined critical next steps. Finally, he facilitated a series of market planning exercises to maximize present markets and explore new sales venues.
The Results
CP has been able to expand their market reach both domestically and internationally. A recent agreement with European distributors is projected to add $150,000 in revenue in the next 36 months. CP has moved forward on their facilities and equipment plan, confident that the revenue stream will support expansion.
Management's Comment
"I am very pleased with the work done here by VPMEP personnel," said Pete Duane, President. "I cannot imagine that smaller manufacturers would not make VPMEP their partner of choice. This program is of great benefit to individual enterprises and to Virginia's economy."
